I had no idea where my lost super was or the names of the funds. I just new it was scattered everywhere and I should definitely have more than $3,000 in my super. Australian Super Finder found all 7 of my funds and now my balance is almost $50,000. Thank you so much for getting my super back on track. ? Leonie, Thomastown VIC

What is Self-Managed Super Fund?

So if you are looking at your super fund today and feel that you are not really that happy with how it's going, and you think you can do better, then maybe you are up for it, or maybe you don't. If you feel you could do better, then here's an opportunity for you to prove that to yourself. You can run your fund.

The Trustee

The moment you are engaged in a managed fund, then there should be a trustee of that fund. It could be the ANP, the state government; it could be anybody. They are the trustees of their money. They control the money, and they invest the money on your behalf.

You can certainly instruct them within individual portfolios whether it's sales, cash or property. You can notify the trustee, but they control the money. You are a member of that fund.

You can become both Trustee and Member

If you set a self-managed super fund, you become both the trustee and the member. So you effectively wear those two hats. One other rule for self-managed super funds in Australia is that you cannot have more than four members in that fund. You may be asking why and the obvious answer is because that is just the way it goes. And you control all of the investment decisions.

There are certainly legislative restrictions and those decisions that you can make. You cannot go on and buy anything. But you do control the investment decisions in your fund.
